The YIT group’s story begins with the Swedish engineering company Ab Allmänna Ingenjörsbyrån (AIB) opening a branch office in Helsingfors, later renamed Helsinki, the capital of the Grand Duchy of Finland.
The company specialized in providing water supply services and within a few decades it became the leader in that market.
The new Finnish company

This is the source of the abbreviation YIT, which would go on to become the company’s official name and a widely known brand.
